Earl Nightengale was a motivational speaker and talk radio pundit who pre-dated and blazed a trail for today’s talk radio personalities. He was able to interview hundreds of successful business people, and as a result, was able to distill their knowledge and teachings into his own radio shows and presentations. Speaking about imagination, Nightengale wrote:
“Imagination is everything. I can’t remember who wrote those three words in that order, but it seems he summed it all up. Your life will reflect the way you use your imagination. The child imagines himself walking like the adult he sees above him. As soon as he can walk, he wants to run. As you reach successive plateaus in life, you begin to imagine yourself reaching the next one. Your imagination leads you from one idea to another through every day and every year of your life. No matter what it is you want, if it’s within the realm of reality, you can get it through the application of your imagination…
People have stood in the way of virtually every good idea in the history. Yet despite this obstruction, our world today consists of thousands of things people once declared impossible. Championing a new idea is a lonely business but, remember, in the future everything will be done better – not can be; we’ll be – and it will be pioneered by people with imagination.”
Earl was a wise man who was convinced that almost anything was possible. I would concur and say that is also true with respect to advancing one’s career.
